I’ve been working hard on a book proposal I’m pitching this weekend. Planning a marketing strategy for a release August 4, and my words are not coming easily today due to nerves. I’ve decided instead to do make each post a collection of images. Enjoy!

DSC_0370I’m at my first Writers Conference today (DFW Writers Conference), trying to run head-long into a dream I’ve had since I was small.

I wrote my first poem when I was six or eight. I could barely write; my penmanship was terrible. Through the years, my grandmother would always ask, “How’s the writing?”

She taught me to love reading, love the mountains, and she made me believe that I am able.

She loved daffodils. I love daffodils. She had them planted all over her property.

It won’t be long now. Her home – the place I loved – will be sold to someone new. I’m glad I had a chance to visit once more. So many lovely places live in my memories because of her home in that little valley. I’ll miss it. I cherish the place.

It’s not quite the same without her in it these days, so I cherish the memories.

With a Twist by {Staci Hart}

Happy Release Day, Staci!

Add it to your bookshelf: Good Reads

Teaser (1)Love is somewhere near the bottom of Lily Thomas’ list of life goals, right next to competitive eating and underwater cave diving. She’s spent six years pirouetting and pliéing her way up the ranks of the New York Ballet with her eye on the prize and love in the back seat. But now that Blane Baker — Lily’s long time crush — is finally single, she’ll throw her rules out the window without thinking twice.

Reality with Blane isn’t as epic as the fantasy she imagined, and the truth sends her spinning straight into the arms of the man she never knew she’d always wanted.

West Williams has been friends with Lily since the day she moved into their building and he saved her armoire from a swift, sudden death by staircase. Their friendship has always been easy, the boundaries clearly defined. With neither of them willing to risk their relationship, they’ve drifted happily through the years as companions, never considering more.

That is, until they do. And that realization changes everything.

Review:

The main characters, West and Lily, are best friends. Until one night, at the opera, West realizes he might want something more. But Lily is ecstatic that her life-long crush, Blane, is finally interested in her, and West is forced to watch from the sidelines. Until the oops… that brings a gleeful cheer from the reader.

Written in first person POV, alternating between West and Lily, each character shines through Hart’s signature fast paced style and skillful turn of phrase. With humor woven throughout, this New Adult tale is a fantastic read.

This novel features believable and unique characters, real emotions and real jobs, and gripping dialogue. The story line is not bogged down by descriptions, though Hart provides just enough information to bring each setting to life.

Maggie, Cooper, Patrick, and Rose are also introduced in this, Book One of the Bad Habits Series, with a hint of great stories to come.

Do I really have to wait until November for Book Two?

About the Author

StaciStaci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom; she has three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife; even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Pep Talk from a Peacock Whisperer

You often say: “I am writing a book.”

You rarely say the rest:“I want to write words that influence, words that inspire, words that matter.”

You spend hours with imaginary friends instead of real ones. You imagine whole galaxies, supporting characters with back stories that are never told, and grow a little giddy when creating that multi-layered bad guy.

Is that you?

Yeah, it’s me, too.

Yet, sometimes, I feel lost on the path to a dream fading from my hope, overwhelmed by the practiced and polished voices that surround me, convinced that mine will never compare.

I’ve learned to repeat these three things to myself.

1)     Comparison murders the muse, and it kills your creativity. Don’t do it. Just don’t.Practice reading beautiful works without comparing. You are building your ability, and you are learning. Give yourself time… and a decent editor.

2)     The submission process is almost exactly that clichéd definition of insanity. Expect to hit send on a piece and hear nothing, or they respond, and it wasn’t with a resounding yes. Limit yourself to half a day of mourning. And, then, you get up, and do it all over again – and again, expecting a different result.

3)     Baby, submit it and forget it. Divorce that piece. Find a new love. ASAP. It is DEAD to you! Keep moving forward, keep working, and for the love of Hemingway, keep writing!!

Love Potion Books

Kate

I’m the last mermaid.

I’m back on shores of Lake Erie, but the cold waters are silent. There is nothing here for me but ghosts and the beach glass that litters the rocky shore. Long ago, I lived below the waves. Now, I am the sole survivor, and at long last, my mermaid glamour is leaving me.

Every day, I walk the beach. Every day, I wonder what happened to my people. The little pieces of colored glass that wash ashore give me simple pleasure. They are gifts from the lake, reminders of home. I fashion them into trinkets: necklaces, earrings, bracelets. They are beautiful things. The humans seem love them.

Every day, I walk the beach. Nothing ever changes, until the day he says hello.

Cooper

I’m dying.

It’s not a question, it’s a fact. The cancer is eating me alive. They told me I have six months to live, maybe less. I came home, back to Chancellor on Lake Erie, to die. The sunsets are vivid there, and I will relish every one.

I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than a Lake Erie sunset until I see her.

All life is fragile as glass.

What would you sacrifice to save the one you love?

Interview with {J. M. Miller}: Part Two

Check out Part One here

J.M. Miller is releasing her Falling in Deep novella, Deep Breath, next Tuesday, June 16, 2015. I caught up with the author recently, and she agreed to answer a few questions. (:

diverWhat authors do you like to read? Favorite saying about writing?

There are so many, Indies and Trad pubbed alike. Stephen King, JK Rowling, Colleen Hoover, Tammara Webber, Fisher Amelie to name a few. I enjoy reading lots of genres, but I tend to stick to anything with a romantic element of some kind.

Favorite saying about writing:

Write like no one’s reading. -Unknown

Favorite writing music? Does it change from project to project? Favorite color?

This changes from project to project, but I’m a rock fan so a lot of my book playlists include a lot of my favorite bands.

Tell us about Deep Breath.

Deep Breath is about twenty-five year old Marissa Pruitt, who discovers a pendant and coordinates her marine archaeologist father had kept hidden for years. Needing more closure about his death, she decides to search for answers and winds up at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico staring into the eyes of a merman.

Do you have any advice for new writers (like me)?

Study up on the usual grammar hang-ups, and keep reading. I often have issues reading while I’m working on a project, but reading is essential. Also, find a critique partner, one who isn’t afraid to tell you the truth and give you ice cream after they’ve made you cry. 😉

Order the AWESOMENESS here.Deep Breath

Before disappearing at sea, Marissa Pruitt’s father—a once revered marine archaeologist—walked the line of insanity, claiming to have seen a mermaid during an ordinary dive in the Gulf of Mexico. He abandoned his life and career, completely obsessed with chasing the truth.
It’s been years since his death, and Marissa is still tormented by countless unanswered questions. When she finds dive coordinates and a stone pendant hidden in her father’s things, she asks for help from his old protégé and sets out to give her father one last goodbye and maybe find closure for her troubled heart. Instead, she finds the truth he’d been searching for all along, with a life and love she never could have imagined. But there’s a price to see it all, one set by betrayal and paid with an anchor at her feet and salt water in her lungs.

picAbout the Author-

J.M. Miller currently consumes her coffee in Florida.

When she isn’t distracted by social media sites, she writes Young Adult and New Adult romance novels that vary in genre from contemporary to paranormal, with a little mystery or suspense thrown in for fun. Aside from spending time with her family, she loves to travel and will jump at the chance to go anywhere, whenever life allows.
